Software ideas

Here are some software ideas that came to my mind through influences by all those radio waves floating around...

  • Uni Jogger - An easy to use and really simple Jogging logger. I started jogging this summer and I would like to keep track of the kilometers I ran.

  • Uni Slider - We have a presentation at our Artificial Intelligence track. We have several slides for it. Originally we wanted to make them with Magic Point, but the room has no beamer :-/ So we will have slides we make with TeX (will be available online when done). Magic Point has this nice feature of being able to show a timeline that shows how much time you have left for the current slide based on the total time available. I would like to create a Palm app that you give a time and number of slides (maybe time should be individually editable for each slide!?) and then it tells you how much time you have left. It would need a fat "Next Slide" button so that you can't miss it with your thumb. The palm can be placed close to the projector so nobody would need to know about it.

  • True multiuser API - That would be kinda complex and a bigger project. I'm also not yet sure whether this would be useful at all... This would be an API that gives applications the possibility to interact with other instances of themselves. Think of a text processing application. Now you are working on a specific paragraph. Another user wants to help and you are not in the same place, maybe not even on the same continent. Now what to do? One solution would be to use VNC. But what if you need to look something up on the net or you are just getting a Jabber message? You would disturb the other users session. This API would give the text processing application the ability to establish a link. You could for example have slide bars that show the position of the other user in the text so that you know that you are working on the same paragraph etc. VNC is not an option, if user A wants to read another paragraph and user B wants to write some text. You need two entities. You could now work in parallel truely on the same document. And another fact is, that the app "knows" that there are more than one users working on the document. So for example it could show a small chat window for communication hook up with your instant messenger.

  • Wikipedia Palm Reader - Yes, I know there is a [Wikipedia version for Mobipocket]. This is already pretty good. But it is only available for the German version of Wikipedia and feels to commercial (the reader). I think it would be real fun to work on some nifty data structures and search algorithms to squeeze the Wikipedia to a Palm-compatible size with accurate speed :-) All I'd need is time and a nice new Palm with a big screen to make reading real fun...

  • Palm Jabber Client - The clients that exists are either old, crap and/or commercial. I have not yet found a client that really fitted my needs and expectations. Yet something I would like to do for myself :-)

  • ByteBiter - Something that I already worked on a bit. It is a software to count your network traffic. Useful for example for GRPS connections. But the notification stuff of the PalmOS is pretty unreliable and I had not yet time to work on workarounds.

That's it for now. If you like on or more of the ideas and would like to discuss them with me on encourage me to do some work or even want to work on one of those please [mail me].
